Every now and then I get a compliment on the blog, followed by some unsolicited advice – “If you’re looking for a job, you shouldn’t write about politics in your blog.”
Of course, I ignore the advice. I don’t always write about politics; my of my posts are music, comedy, or whatever is on my mind. If it is political, I write it.
During the past decade, I stood by silently as our leaders invaded a country that did not attack us at the expense of our efforts to find those responsible for the 9/11 attacks. We wasted billions of dollars on the effort and suspended our most cherished values. Even worse, we re-elected those responsible in 2004. I was silent then. I won’t be silent now.
If there is one rule I follow, it’s that I don’t blog about my employers, whoever they may be at the time, or their industry. Notice that there are no posts about public utilities and defense contractors. Right now, I am between jobs, and some say that I should be more careful. To that I say, if you’re an employer and are troubled by what I write, perhaps it’s best that you don’t hire me. We wouldn’t be happy with each other.
I am a writer. It’s been my career most of my life. I use this blog to work on my craft and provide samples of my work. This blog helps me be a better writer. When I speak my mind, I write better. If I try to be diplomatic or dance around a point, my writing suffers.
Lately, I have been away from my blog, spending more time on other social media sites. Now that I have time on my hands, I’ll stay here more often and post.
If you have any complaints, leave a comment. If I’m wrong, I’ll correct it. That’s one of the luxuries of online writing – I can always edit what I write.
That’s another reason why I blog.
